Burewala is the headquarters of Burewala Tehsil in Vehari District, in the heart of central Punjab's canal belt. The Sutlej River crosses near the towns of Kachi Pakki, Jamlera and Sahuka, and the district forms the river's right bank boundary.

Waqar Younis — born in Burewala in 1971 to a Punjabi Jat family — became the youngest man to captain Pakistan in Tests, and later the national head coach. Mohammad Irfan, born in nearby Gaggo Mandi, was working in a plastic-pipe factory before a trial at Khan Research Laboratories changed his life.

The single most significant heritage site in the Burewala area is the shrine of Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Dewan, a Sufi preacher of Islam in the Punjab born in 651 AD.
The shrine sits in the village historically called Kothewal, near Burewala — roughly 125 km from Multan and 73 km from Pakpattan, and about 18 km from Burewala city by road. It draws visitors year-round, with the largest gatherings on the annual urs.
The site anchors Burewala's religious geography and its tourism potential — a genuine pilgrimage destination that few English-language travel sites cover.
